9 things that you need to know about Triple 9

A brand new, but yet mature, project. Decades of sailing experience, ocean records, composite construction authority, engineering excellence… All key ingredients to make a state-of-the-art boat studied in detail to perfection.

Know in the list bellow the 9 points that turn the Triple 9 so unique.

The Triple 9 has been created with the scope of making a modern, safe and fast boat for reduced crew in offshore races or sport cruising.

The hard-chine hull shape boosts sailing performance and comfort. The composite epoxy sandwich construction from female mould under vacuum follows structural ISO Rules for Category A which ensures quality and safety.

Deck layout is both ergonomic and functional. No stone has been left unturned when it comes to sail handling and control. This is not casual, this is the outcome of many thousands of miles of sailing. Equipment market leaders have collaborated with their expertise and complete the Triple9 with their gear.

The fractional rig sail plan benefits from simplicity and control with a non-overlapping jib and traditional or square top mainsail. Gennaker on bowsprit, spinnaker on pole, Code-0 and storm jib complete a versatile sail inventory according to the sailing program for either inshore or across the ocean. Aluminium or carbon options to suite any preference.

All the parametres have been optimized to create a winner in both IRC and ORC rating systems.

The Triple 9 is a brand new yet mature project. Decades of sailing experience, ocean records, composite construction authority, engineering excellence… all key ingredients to make a state-of-the-art boat studied in detail to perfection. The scope: to create the best boat in her range ever.

Design: Eng. Sito Avilés Ramos (Balance Arquitectura Naval) & Arch. Andrea Gancia.

Yard: Nelo – Portugal.

This team now puts together all the knowledge in offshore sailing, design and construction of racing yachts during the last 30 years and after numerous successful projects.

Composite construction has no secrets for Nelo, world leader in the competitive, sophisticated and demanding racing kayak market since decades. Light weight, ultra-strong materials, exquisite building methods and engineering make of the Triple 9 a light yet robust boat.

The hull lines are the result of a deep Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) study using the best available software in the market, Numeca, used also for America’s Cup or Imoca projects.

The bow area with reverse stem has been optimized to reduce wave making drag and generating dynamic lift as the boat speed increases for early and easy planning.

The scientifically studied shape reduces wetted surface area at low angles of heel and the strategically located hard-chine increases righting moment at higher heel angles.

The stiff streamlined lines and low rocker combined with low weight enable the boat to escape quickly from the theoretical design speed limit.

The appendages and sail plan have been also optimized using CFD in depth.

The keel sections, area and planform are customized to generate maximum lift/drag ratio with minimum leeway.

Twin rudders for maximum control under any sailing condition, generating maximum performance and extending the range of angle of attack without stall.

Construction out of female mould laminated over CNC assisted milled plug.
Epoxy/e-glass/hs-carbon/SAN sandwich under vacuum to minimize weight and increase stiffness and strength. Gel-coat external finish. Bulkheads and structure taped to hull and deck. Composite sandwich furniture built in internal moulding bonded to hull and deck using high strength epoxy structural adhesive.

High tensile steel FEA analyzed keel spar with lead bulb. Fin composite fairing out of female mould.

Internal twin angled fixed rudders. Blade built in e-glass/epoxy from CNC milled moulds. Rudder stock in 17-4ph steel.

JP3 self-aligning rudder bearings.
